But if he applies force on the other side it will be on the line of action & this Moment will be maximum & the tree can be moved easily as it is at the point of tipping over due to the weight of the roots.

The force exerted (Trying to lift the tree) was, Tension force of rope=Tension force at a certain distance from the End of the rope= Force that would be required to push (lift) the car upwards if it were not attached to anything else.
In physics it's called as- "The Loewy Effect"
Now, when he went near the tree, it was easier to push upwards on car since it's a force acting in the opposite direction of his weight. AND thus, when Andy started pushing upwards, he seemed to be lifting it up instead of just pushing it up
So, he was applying force on the car in such way that it seems like car is being lifted up. By pushing upwards at a certain distance from the root of tree, there was no weight (applied) in opposite direction and thus moving towards applied force gives him more effect than when pushing downwards.
Thus, the force to lift the car was directly proportional to distance from tree's roots. less

Now I will describe it using Andy’s phenomena. In that criteria the root of the tree was the center point mentioned above.Imagine those... less

So when they were trying to uproot the tree from the bottom side, which means the applied force was near the
center point(the root). As a result the moment became smaller and for that,it became very difficult to move the tree. But when Andy applied that same 10N force at the other side of the tree, the distance between the root and the force became much bigger. Then the moment was bigger than the previous one. So,it became easier to move the tree then.
So the whole concept was about
Moment of a force. less

hi Tanveer how you can assume that they need 10 N force to move the tree away . did you know 10 N is actually required to displace mass of 1.02 kg and i think mass of tree is much higher

We have to apply Total Anticlockwise Moment=Total Clockwise Moment. Suppose the roots of the tree has a moment of 25N/m after falling onto the car. So in order to lift the tree from the car the same 25N/m of moment should be applied to the force acting away from the tree's roots.

At a distance further from the roots, the distance you have to move the tree from the ground to upright is bigger than the distance closer to the roots. To make up for the short distance, you have to give a powerful force, which makes it harder to push the tree up. The weight of the tree is spread out across the distance, a longer distance means the weight is more spread out, making it easier to lift the tree.

-Pivot: Is the fixed point over which something can turn or move about. For ex. In a wheelbarrow, the wheel will be the pivot.
-Turning effect of force applied: This is simply the turning of the object about the pivot. For ex. A spanner being turned about a bolt (pivot) to tighten or loosen it.
Here, the tree’s roots were still embedded in the ground and we know that fixed point forms the pivot. So if the roots are firmly in the ground, it won’t be possible to uproot the tree from the bottom end(roots’ side). If they tried lifting the tree over a short distance from the pivot, this would give the less efficient moment and would need a hefty amount of force. However, if the tree was lifted from the other end, force required is less and gives the proper result. This is basically because the... less

a.
There is a pivot (i.e. the point at which the

b.
The effect of a force is greatest at the furthest

What the people there were doing wrong was that they were
trying to lift the tree from near the pivot. However, the tree hadn’t
completely uprooted and had little effect upon lifting the tree. Andy’s
instincts told him to lift the tree at the furthest end from the pivot, meaning
that the effect of the force will be at its peak. In doing so, they were able
to save the person inside the car. less

Moment of force is the idea to make a body to rotate on a pivot. Moment has a simple rule that is the closer you are to the pivot or the point the more energy you would require to rotate the body. This rule is obeyed by many objects which we use in our day-to-day life. Like a spanner handle is placed far from the pivot to rotate the nut or nail easier with less force. Similarly, in this case the pivot is the root of the tree, it is the turning point for the tree, when the crowd gathered they applied force very close to the pivot or the root this cause the tree not to budge but when Andy positioned the force on the far end from the pivot it made it easier for the crowd to move the tree. In simple, we can sum it up that the greater the distance the less the force needed and the smaller the distance the more force is needed which this scenario perfectly portrayed. less

Momentum is the product of force and the perpendicular distance between the pivot and line of force. He considered providing a force greater than the weight of the tree, but this is only feasible if the force is delivered on the other side of the root.
It is a fact that when a force is applied far from the pivot, the force is sufficient to elevate the other force/weight. Mr. Andy used that notion when assisting the individual.

The idea about moments is that the further a force acts away from the pivot(the turning point of an object), the more effective it will be in turning the object. For example, the knob of a door is situated the farthest from its pivot, the hinges. In the picture, we can see that the tree is tilted down towards the side of its roots. From this, we can guess that(counting the car as a pivot) there is a greater load acting downwards in that side of the tree, than the side with the leaves. The way the people were doing it before, they were wasting strength overcoming all the those forces and uprooting the tree. They were using the car as a pivot, and the distance between their force and the car/pivot was not much. However, pushing in an anticlockwise direction on the other side, with the leaves, shifts the pivot from being the car to being the roots, all the way on the other side of the tree. The pivot being far away, the forces proved effective. less

As mentioned in the scenario, the roots of the tree were fixed with the ground so it was a fixed point and a fixed point is called a pivot. This pivot allowed the tree to be removed over the car. According to the principles of moment, the distance from the pivot to the point where the force is applied is directly proportional to the moment, meaning the longer this distance, the greater the rotation of the tree and that is why Mr Andy applied his force on the farther end of the tree so that with less force would produce greater moment due to the longer distance, away from the tree and was successful to remove it and save the passenger. less

The car was acting as a pivot here because the weight of the whole tree was on the car. The bottom side of the tree was not uprooted, so it was heavier than the upper part, so more force was needed to lift it from near the roots. Therefore, it was easier to lift the tree upwards at a certain distance away from the root of the tree as there was less weight in the upper direction.
Today, we learned about a great example in the field of physics. this topic can be identified as the 'moments'. Moments are directly proportional to the force and distance of a body, just like this one! Easy-Peasy! less

Moment of a force is a measure of its tendency to cause a body to rotate on a pivot. Moment justifies that closer you are to the pivot, more force is required to move the object. This law is obeyed by many objects which we use in our daily life. For example, if we use a nut-cracker the more the distance is, the less force is required. The less the distance is, the more force is required. Similarly, in this case the pivot is the root of the tree which is the turning point. The crowd tried to lift the tree by going closer to the pivot but they were doing it wrong as the tree is not fully uprooted. But, Andy did it in a correct way because the distance was more from the pivot which made it easier to move the tree which ultimately helped to save the person. In simpler words, if we sum up, the more the distance from the pivot the less force is required and the less the distance from the pivot the more force is required to lift the body which is demonstrated in this scenario. less
